In the English language, black sheep is an idiom used to describe an odd or disreputable member of a group, especially within a family and black wool was also considered commercially undesirable because it could not be dyed. Nobody told this to the author of ”Baa Baa Black Sheep” way back in 1731 and many have linked the lyrics to a cry out against wool taxes, servility or even racism depending on how far removed the theorist is from the original author Mother Goose, herself a fictitious character and responsible for one of the world’s most famous collective of nursery rhymes!
