Mortar and Pestle Recipes

One of our most popular pieces is this mortar and pestle set by Helen Daly Ceramics.   Designed so that the lid and bowl interlock, hiding the pestle neatly inside.  Both the lid and the bowl can be used to grind spices.  It is a must-have for the cook in your family!  The deep blue colour is accented with white for a stunning contrast.

Here are a couple of super-delicious recipes to use with your mortar and pestle:

Basil Pesto Mortar and Pestle Recipe

Ingredients:

Handful of basil leaves

1 clove of garlic

1 tbsp pinenuts

Sea Salt

Freshly ground black pepper

1 tbps grated parmesan

olive oil

Directions:

Put all the ingredients into the mortar, except the olive oil and parmesan.  Pound to a rough paste.  Gradually add the oil and grated parmesan.

 

I have an Italian friend who swears by adding half roasted almonds and half pine nuts… so play away, and enjoy!!

 

Korma Curry Paste

Ingredients:

2 cloves garlic

1 inch fresh root ginger

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon garam masala

½ teaspoon sea salt

2 tablespoons groundnut oil

1 tablespoon tomato puree

2 fresh green chilies

3 tablespoons desiccated coconut

2 tablespoons ground almonds

1 small bunch coriander/cilantro

2 teaspoons cumin seeds

1 teaspoon coriander seeds

Directions:

Peel the garlic and ginger.

Add the spices to a dry frying pan over medium heat.  Toast lightly for several minutes until golden brown.

Add the toasted spices to a pestle and mortar and grind until fine.  Mix the toasted spices with the rest of the ingredients until you have a smooth paste.
